How to Get Flight Hours Without Being a CFI
Last updated July 3, 2026
Flight instructing is the most common way to build hours, but it's not the only way. If teaching isn't for you, several non-CFI pilot jobs can build time toward 1,500.
Short answer
Why CFI is the most common path
Instructing is popular because it's year-round, widely available, and you log time on nearly every lesson. Becoming a CFI has its own eligibility rules under 14 CFR § 61.183. But it does require earning the instructor certificate and enjoying teaching — which isn't for everyone.
Non-CFI jobs that can build flight hours
Plenty of roles build time without instructing. All typically require a commercial certificate (14 CFR § 61.129) and a current medical (14 CFR § 61.23):
- Aerial survey and pipeline patrol
- Skydive (jump) flying and banner towing
- Ferry flying and Part 135 cargo
Which options are realistic at 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 hours
| Roughly | Often realistic (varies by operator) |
|---|---|
| ~250 hrs | Banner tow, traffic watch |
| ~500 hrs | Skydive, pipeline patrol, aerial survey, ferry |
| ~750 hrs | More survey/patrol, some Part 135 SIC cargo |
| 1,000+ hrs | Turbine cargo, Caravan, and more PIC roles |
Tradeoffs of non-CFI jobs
Non-CFI roles can be seasonal, location-specific, or weather-dependent, and some want more than 250 hours. On the plus side, they build varied experience and can be a great fit if you'd rather fly missions than teach.
Ratings and experience that help
An instrument rating opens survey, patrol, and cargo roles; tailwheel helps with banner tow and bush flying; multi-engine unlocks twin cargo and charter. See best pilot jobs to build flight hours and how to get flight hours after flight school.

FAA rules set baseline certificate and aeronautical experience requirements, but individual pilot jobs often add employer, aircraft, insurance, and mission-specific requirements. Always confirm current rules with the FAA and the specific employer.
Frequently asked questions
Can you build flight hours without being a CFI?+
Yes. Many pilots build hours through survey, patrol, skydive, banner tow, ferry, traffic watch, and cargo roles instead of instructing. Minimums vary by operator, aircraft, and insurance.
What are the best non-CFI pilot jobs?+
Popular non-CFI options include aerial survey, pipeline patrol, skydive, banner tow, ferry, and Part 135 cargo. The best fit depends on your hours, ratings, and location.
